How to choose the right type of bollard
Dec, 2022

When it comes to safety tools, the bollard is one of the most recognisable. With its wide range of uses and styles, there is a different type of bollard available for every different situation, so it’s no wonder they have become so popular.

At Warehouse Safety Solutions, we stock a wide variety of different safety tools. You’ve come to the right place if you’re looking for bollards, line marking, or safety rails. Sydney and Melbourne are just some of the cities we cater to, so get in touch today and let’s discuss safety!

Uses For Bollards

Bollards are primarily used to prevent vehicles from entering areas that they aren’t supposed to. They are a common sight across car parks, warehouses, footpaths and garages. Naturally, different environments have resulted in a variety of specialised bollards suited for different situations.

Types Of Bollards

1) Permanent Bollards

These are the most common form of bollards and are often found in warehouses. These bollards prevent forklifts or other vehicles from crashing into any stock or pedestrians. These bollards are painted in bright colours, providing strong visual protection as well as a physical one. These bollards can be either embedded in the ground or rely on an anchor to mount them to the ground.

2) Removable Bollards

Removable bollards are often used to protect restricted car parks or pathways. If a car park or pathway needs to be used, the bollard can be removed to create access. These bollards are the perfect solution if vehicles only need to be restricted during specific times. Retractable bollards offer a similar service, except they won’t have to be manually removed.

3) Plastic Bollards

These offer the visual identification of a bollard without its strength. They have similar uses to safety cones and can be perfect for forklift training because if a vehicle hits a plastic bollard, it won’t receive any damage. Plastic bollards can also be a great way to quickly bring attention to temporary hazards, so it’s great to have a few on hand. However, in a crash or accident, a plastic bollard won’t function as a barrier or prevent any damage.

4) Rebounding Bollards

Rebounding bollards work similarly to permanent bollards, except they give some leeway upon contact. If a car or forklift collides with a rebounding bollard, the bollard will slowly bring the vehicle to a halt, preventing the vehicle damage that would occur with a permanent bollard. They must be given more space than other times of bollards because rebound bollards require room to adjust.
